Our Thoughts On Web Design…

Domain Names

If you don’t have a domain name yet, then this is the first step in establishing a web presence. Your domain name is how your visitors will find you on the  web.  Your domain name is basically like the address of your home. It is  how people will find you to visit you.

Your domain name is short for the technical term Domain Name System or DNS. It is an easy and memorable way devised to reach your website. You have probably heard of an IP address( Internet Protocol Address) and even seen one, the domain name points to a specific IP address for your website without having viewers see the monotonous number chain needed to reach your site. Imagine if someone asked you for your website and you said, “Oh yes, just go to 06.249.79.90.” The world wide web would probably not be quite as popular.

Most web hosts will offer you a free domain name for the first year you sign up with their hosting service. If they do not, reconsider your hosting choice. The preferred domain name would be your business or professional name. However you do not want a really long domain name. It can become monotonous.

FIND A DOMAIN NAME…

Here are some pointers in selecting a domain name.

Use a location and a keyword.

If you are a singer in Brandon Florida an obvious choice would be brandonsinger.com. Having a location and Keyword (a word that describes your business) will help your domain name place well in the rankings, especially in the above example,  if someone is looking for a singer in Brandon.

Make sure you are the owner of your Domain Name.

When you sign up for a domain name it’s very important to be sure you are the domain owner and administrative contact. When completing the domain name process,the online form should ask you for this information, if it does not, ask the company that you are registering your domain name through where you can complete this information, if they are unable to advise you or they tell you that they will own your domain name….move on.

Try not to use dashes or numbers in your domain name.

The simpler the domain name the better, a dash or a number can throw off a visitor enough that they cannot reach your site and will stop trying when they grow tired of searching for your site.

Always search for .com domain names.

The domain name registrar will recommend other domain name extensions like .net, .biz and others. If you can get a domain name with the .com extension,it is the best. Non profits and churches should search for .org first, however.

Don’t get frustrated, there are a lot of names out there.

In 2017, 330.6 million domain names had been registered. The likelihood that you are going to find the perfect name for your business is unlikely. Take Ramsey Design for instance… We would have liked to have had ramseydesign.com  but we had to settle with ramzdesign.com. Sure people pronounce it rams design instead of ram z design because we didn’t use hyphens, but we can live with it. Maybe someday we can get the real name. Be imaginative and patient.

WORDPRESS

We have chosen WordPress to create websites because it is a designer’s dream. We can, with one click see how our design is coming as we create it. With html,  and other solutions, the process is a lot more complicated with a lot more adjustments necessary to have the site look the way we wish.

We have chosen WordPress for our clients, because we feel it is a publishing platform available with the right balance of functionality, flexibility, cost, and support to match hand-coded websites and it also outperforms the other available solutions. Our clients have told us that with a little training they are able to make changes without having to rely on our schedule, to do so. We believe that proprietary design is bad. We think your independence from having to ask us for help is not a hindrance, but a bonus.

Lets face it, these are smart people, morally bankrupt and unscrupulous people, but smart all the same. Unfortunately, at every turn we need to have smart people on our side as well. We use WordPress almost exclusively in our website builds, one of the best protections against hackers of WordPress is the plugin WordFence. Wordfence is a reasonably priced plugin for WordPress that uses sophisticated firewalls and virus protection to block attacks on your actual WordPress installation. Because of WordPress’ popularity, hackers are always attempting to get in, it is not an easy target, because WordPress is always working hard to stay secure, but added protection is always a prudent decision. Next to your web designer, this is the most important part of your web design campaign. Your choice in web host will predict how happy your web designer will be, how easily you can correct any problems that may come up with your website, how well your email works, and how efficiently the speed of your web site will be.

We have worked with web hosts that do not have 24/7/365 support. The problem is that the likelihood of your site crashing late on a Friday cannot be predicted. And you do not want your site down or a 404 error splashing up on your site as you wait for support to come in on Monday morning. Hosting companies that do not care enough to have 24/7/365 support usually do not care that much about the support they provide when they are available.

Price
It is very important to budget your web hosting costs, this and the domain name will occur annually. However, you do not always want to go for the cheapest hosting package available. It is very important to compare prices, if the prices limit Website space and email storage, you  should look at the next package that allows this to be unlimited.

Domain Names
It is nice not to have to pay for your domain name for one year when you start your website. It will show up the next year, but we will take what we can get, right?

Here is a quick overview of how and why we do things a little differently. We think you will agree that it is focused on having YOU be in control of your site after it is expertly made by Ramsey Design.

We will communicate with you as you register a domain name and purchase a web host, if you do not already have one. If you already have one and decide to change web hosts because yours does not offer the best service, we will guide you in transferring your website to the new web host for a reasonable fee.

We utilize the WordPress website content management system. We will add it to your website as well as a recommended WordPress theme.

We have learned that the AVADA theme is the most reasonably priced WordPress theme, that allows countless variations for design. There are hundreds of themes out there, but Ramsey Design can take this theme and turn it into any type of website you desire.

Utilizing the Slider Revolution  by Theme Punch can add that extra wow to your site. The professional license makes a great difference in the capabilities of this WordPress plugin.

An important part of building a website is to gather all of the information about you and your business that we can. We will need lots of photos and information. Any video links you might have will be great as well as your social media links. Ramsey Design can offer recommendations on professional photographers and video photographers in your area, should your budget allow it and if we find it necessary from a design standpoint.

IN MY WORLD, PROPRIETARY= BAD

Let’s face it: when you are an entrepreneur and/or small business owner, every penny counts. So why pay someone to do the things that you can do yourself? Although I do have service plans that allow you to contact me when you need a small change to your website, one of the most frequent requests from my clients over the years has been to create web sites that allow those clients to be more hands on when they want to. What better way to achieve that than to create a business model that utilizes the very popular WordPress software. Wordpress is very user friendly website content management system. Not only are the word press basics relatively easy to learn, but it eliminates the issue of proprietary material.

Some visual designers are very proprietary. The more complicated the better. If you cannot figure out how to make changes to your site, you will have to call them to do so for you. Not a very time efficient option when you are faced with a small but critical update. Remember that my goal is to set the stage for your maximum success with minimal investment. Time spent waiting for your web master is time spent potentially missing income so if it’s something that you can do yourself with just a little bit of coaching, why not have the option to do it? Selecting a WordPress platform definitely gives my clients options. Once the main design is complete, most of my clients are able to understand and make changes to their website after some training by Ramsey Design.
